Tension flared in Abuja on Monday as a group of protesters stormed the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), demanding what they described as fairness and transparency in the commission’s handling of investigations involving former public officials.
The protesters converged on the anti-graft agency’s headquarters in the Jabi area of the Federal Capital Territory early in the morning, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards bearing inscriptions such as “Due Process for All,” “Stop Political Persecution,” and “Justice, Not Witch-Hunt.”
The demonstration coincided with the appearance of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who honoured an invitation by the commission over matters reportedly linked to his tenure in office.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters, some Pro, and the other Anti El-Rufai attempted to gain access to the premises but were prevented by security operatives stationed at the entrance.
Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies formed a barricade to prevent the crowd from disrupting activities within the complex.
Despite the heightened atmosphere, el-Rufai arrived at the commission’s office around mid-morning in a convoy of vehicles. He was seen briefly acknowledging journalists before being ushered into the building by EFCC officials.
The former governor did not address the protesters but appeared calm as he walked into the facility.
Sources within the commission confirmed that el-Rufai had been invited to clarify issues relating to petitions and financial transactions during his administration, though the EFCC had yet to release an official statement on the specifics of the inquiry as of press time.
One of the protest coordinators, who identified himself as a civil society advocate, told reporters that the demonstration was aimed at ensuring that investigations are conducted without bias.
“We are here to demand accountability, but also fairness. If anyone is invited, it should be done professionally and without political undertones,” he said.
However, another group present at the scene expressed support for the EFCC’s actions, insisting that no individual should be above the law.
Security was tightened around the commission’s headquarters throughout the day, with vehicular movement along adjoining roads partially restricted to prevent a breakdown of law and order. No injuries or arrests were reported as of the time of filing this report.
The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of former public office holders across the country, as the EFCC intensifies its anti-corruption drive.
As of press time, el-Rufai was still inside the EFCC facility undergoing questioning. The commission is expected to issue an official statement upon the conclusion of the engagement.
