The United States has lost one of its most enduring civil rights figures, as veteran political activist and preacher, Jesse Jackson, has died at the age of 84.
Jackson, a towering figure in American politics and the struggle for racial equality, passed away on Monday, according to a statement released by his family.
The cause of death was not immediately disclosed as at the time of filing this report.
Jackson, protégé of the late civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., rose to national prominence in the 1960s as a passionate advocate for social justice, economic empowerment, and equal rights for African Americans.
He was present during some of the most defining moments of the Civil Rights Movement and later founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, an organization dedicated to promoting civil rights, social justice and political activism.
In 1984 and 1988, Jackson made history by seeking the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, becoming one of the first African Americans to mount a serious bid for the White House.
Though he did not secure the nomination, his campaigns reshaped American politics, expanded voter participation among minorities, and paved the way for future Black leaders, including former President Barack Obama.
Throughout his decades-long career, Jackson remained a vocal advocate on issues ranging from voting rights and police reform to economic inequality and international human rights.
He was also known for his diplomatic interventions, including efforts to secure the release of American hostages abroad.
Tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, civil rights organizations, and admirers across the globe, describing him as a relentless fighter for justice and a moral voice in American public life.
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1941, Jackson was ordained as a Baptist minister and later established himself as both a religious and political leader.
His influence spanned generations, inspiring grassroots activism and shaping public discourse on race and democracy in the United States.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
Jackson is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and a legacy that helped redefine the landscape of American politics and civil rights advocacy.
