Veteran Nigerian actor, Davis Ofor, widely known for his iconic role as “Clarus” in the classic sitcom New Masquerade, has died at the age of 85.
News of his passing was announced on Tuesday by fellow actor Tony Akposheri via an Instagram post, in which he expressed shock and deep sorrow over the loss.
Akposheri recalled their recent moments together during the New Year celebrations, noting that the late actor was in good spirits as they reflected on life and shared hopes for the future.
“Today, my heart is heavy. Davis Ofor, fondly known as Clarus from New Masquerade, is gone,” he wrote.
“We crossed into the New Year together, laughing, talking, sharing memories, and speaking hopefully about the days ahead. None of us knew that time was already counting differently for you.”
Describing Ofor as more than just a screen personality, Akposheri paid tribute to his warmth, humour, and enduring presence.
“You were more than a familiar face on screen. You were a friend, a brother, a man with warmth, humour, and a presence that could light up any space,” he added. “It is hard to believe that the voice I heard not long ago is now a memory.”
The cause of death had not been disclosed as of press time.
Ofor rose to national prominence through his role in New Masquerade, one of Nigeria’s most beloved television comedies of the 1980s, which aired on the Nigerian Television Authority.
His portrayal of the witty and often comical “Clarus” endeared him to audiences across the country and cemented his place as one of the most memorable figures in Nigeria’s television history.
The sitcom, known for its rich cultural themes and humour, featured a stellar cast and played a significant role in shaping early Nigerian television entertainment, with characters like Clarus becoming household names.
Tributes have begun to pour in from colleagues, fans, and members of the entertainment industry, many of whom have taken to social media to celebrate Ofor’s life and legacy, describing him as a pioneer whose contributions helped lay the foundation for modern Nigerian comedy.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
