The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has distanced itself from the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, cautioning that the move could destabilise the state and negatively impact the party.
In a statement, the party leadership said it was aware of recent developments in the Rivers State House of Assembly and acknowledged the legislature’s constitutional responsibilities.
However, it described the impeachment move as politically motivated and unacceptable.
The APC argued that the development stems from lingering internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting that such disputes should not be allowed to spill over and affect governance under the APC administration in Rivers State.
According to the party, the impeachment threat is being linked to budgetary issues. It recalled that during the period of emergency rule, a one-year budget of ₦1.485 trillion was presented by the President to the National Assembly and approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.
The budget, the APC noted, is expected to cover expenditures until August 2026.
The party further stated that the governor is not constitutionally obligated to present a supplementary budget if he is satisfied with the existing appropriation, adding that the constitution allows a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.
The APC leadership urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly those elected on the party’s platform, to resist external influences aimed at undermining the state government.
It warned that it would take all necessary steps to prevent internal wrangling from weakening the APC administration in the state, while calling on lawmakers to immediately halt the impeachment process in order to safeguard the party’s image and ensure sustained development in Rivers State.
