Outstanding journalist and Editor of the prominent Nigerian online newspaper The Niche, Emeka Alex Duru, has earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Lagos State University after successfully defending his doctoral thesis on the interplay between the press and politics in Nigeria.
Alex-Duru’s research, titled “Press and Politics in Nigeria, 1970–2023,” examines the evolving role of the media in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape over more than five decades.
The study provides a comprehensive analysis of how the press has interacted with political power, influenced public opinion, and contributed to democratic development in the country.
Alex-Duru, popularly known as “Nze Orlu,” announced the successful defence of his thesis on Thursday through a post on social media, where he expressed gratitude to God and appreciation to family, friends and colleagues who supported him throughout the demanding academic journey.
“This is to inform you that I just successfully defended my thesis in ‘Press and Politics in Nigeria 1970–2023’ for my PhD at Lagos State University. Join me in thanking the Lord for this great feat. Thanks immensely for your support and encouragement. God bless you and the family,” he wrote.
The period examined in Alex-Duru’s research—1970 to 2023—covers some of the most transformative years in Nigeria’s history. It spans the post–civil war era, several phases of military rule, the struggle for democratic governance, and the country’s return to civilian rule in 1999, as well as the rapid growth of digital media in recent years.
Scholars and media analysts believe the work will contribute significantly to the understanding of the Nigerian media’s role in political accountability, governance and democratic consolidation.
Alex-Duru, who has spent decades in the journalism profession, is widely respected for his analytical writing, commitment to ethical journalism and advocacy for independent media.
As Editor of The Niche, he has promoted investigative reporting and provided a platform for critical national discourse.
Over the years, he has traversed several newsrooms in Nigeria, including the now-rested Post Express Newspaper and Daily Independent Newspaper, where he built a reputation for incisive reporting and editorial depth.
He has also served on the editorial boards of some Nigerian newspapers and contributes to international media outlets.
Those who knew him during his university years recall that he was an exceptionally brilliant student and an avid reader with a deep passion for knowledge.
He was a member of the well-known Dollar Club on campus, an elitist group noted for their social vibrancy and panache without compromising academic excellence.
Colleagues in the media industry have since congratulated the veteran journalist, a Red Cap Chief, describing his academic achievement as another milestone in a career dedicated to the advancement of journalism and public discourse in Nigeria.
Alex-Duru is joyfully married to Dr. Jane Alex-Duru, whom friends describe as another deep thinker and strong intellectual companion.
