Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has again taken a swipe at Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing him as untrustworthy and accusing him of betraying political allies who supported his emergence as governor.
Wike, who spoke during a public function in Abuja, said the political crisis in Rivers State was avoidable if Fubara had remained loyal to agreements and respected the political structure that brought him to power.
The former Rivers governor alleged that despite efforts made to reconcile both camps in the prolonged political dispute, Fubara failed to honour commitments reached during peace meetings.
According to Wike, trust remains the foundation of political relationships, insisting that he and his supporters were disappointed by what he termed acts of betrayal from the governor.
The FCT minister maintained that he played a major role in Fubara’s emergence in the 2023 governorship election and expected mutual respect and cooperation in governance.
The renewed verbal attack is the latest in the lingering feud between the two political figures, whose rivalry has continued to polarise political stakeholders in Rivers State and the larger Niger Delta region.
The political crisis in Rivers escalated shortly after Fubara assumed office, leading to a split in the State House of Assembly, defections by lawmakers, and repeated clashes between loyalists of both camps.
Several reconciliation efforts, including interventions by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and leaders of the People’s Democratic Party, have yet to produce lasting peace.
Observers say the continued face-off could further affect governance and political stability in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
