Labour Party LP, presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi has said Nigeria is more naturally endowed than the US and UK, but poor leadership and weak institutions have hindered its development.
Speaking at the 2025 Leadership Forum Conference in Abuja, Obi identified key challenges facing Nigeria.
This according to him includes: Poor Human Development, Underinvestment in Education and Healthcare as well as inadequate Infrastructure.
Said Óbi ” Life expectancy is among the lowest globally, with high infant mortality rates.
“Medical professionals and academics are poorly treated, leading to brain drain.
” Physical infrastructure is prioritized over human development.’
Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s transformation depends on leadership that respects institutions and upholds judicial independence.
He urged young Nigerians not to lose hope, encouraging them to contribute to the country’s progress.
“Nigeria is naturally better positioned than several advanced economies, with superior weather, fertile land, and abundant mineral resources. The difference is that countries like the US and UK developed strong institutions, while Nigeria failed to build the systems needed to convert resources into national prosperity,” Obi noted.
He warned that current decisions, including Eurobond borrowings, will burden future generations and urged Nigerians to demand accountability and good governance .
