Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Punch Newspaper Correspondent, Mr. Matthew Ochei, describing his passing as a significant loss to the media profession and the nation.
Ochei, an indigene of Ukunzu in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 43.
In a condolence message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor sympathised with the bereaved family, journalists in the state, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council. He noted that the late journalist was a committed professional who carried out his duties with courage, integrity and a strong sense of responsibility.
Governor Oborevwori said Ochei’s dedication to truth, public enlightenment and ethical journalism earned him widespread respect within and beyond the media industry.
“This is indeed a painful moment. Delta State has lost a fearless and dedicated journalist who served the public with professionalism and integrity,” the governor said. “His untimely death is a heavy blow to his family, the media community and all advocates of responsible journalism.”
The governor extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, praying that God grants them the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones he left behind. May God grant them comfort at this difficult time and grant the departed soul eternal rest,” he added.
He also assured the NUJ and the wider media community of the state government’s solidarity as they mourn the loss of one of their own.
