A seven-year-old girl created a touching moment on Wednesday when she approached former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, at a protest ground in Abuja, drawing brief attention away from the charged political atmosphere.
The protest, held in the Federal Capital Territory, was organised to express dissatisfaction with the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the actions of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with participants calling for the protection of democratic principles.
Tension had gripped the venue as prominent political figures, including Rabiu Kwankwaso, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola, and Aminu Tambuwal, arrived alongside their supporters in a show of unity.
Amid the crowd, the young girl broke through security and ran toward Obi, embracing him tightly in a spontaneous display of affection.
The unexpected gesture momentarily startled aides, but Obi signalled for calm and engaged the child warmly.
Bending to her level, he asked her name and what she wished to say. In a quiet but striking response, she said: “Thank you for fighting for us.”
The girl, who said she was on school holiday, expressed hope for a better future. Her words resonated with many at the scene, briefly shifting focus from political rhetoric to the human impact of governance and public policy.
Obi held her hands and spoke with her for about a minute, encouraging her to remain committed to her education and listen to her parents.
He also reassured her that efforts were being made to build a future where children would not have to participate in protests.
As she was escorted back to her parents, the former governor watched her depart, visibly moved.
Observers at the event noted that the brief exchange underscored the broader significance of the protest, highlighting the concerns of ordinary Nigerians, including the younger generation, about the country’s direction.
The demonstration, though largely political in tone, was punctuated by this moment of innocence, serving as a reminder of the stakes involved for future generations.
