The Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike, directing its members to withdraw their services until further notice.
The industrial action was announced on Tuesday through a notice issued by the leadership of the union’s ABSU branch. The development is expected to affect academic activities at the university, including teaching, examinations and other official engagements involving academic staff.
According to the notice, the strike is aimed primarily at pressing for the implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government, alongside other outstanding demands of the union.
The notice, signed by the ASUU-ABSU Chairperson, Chidi Mba, and Secretary, Victor Obisike, directed all academic staff to completely withdraw their services and comply with the directives of the union.
The union also instructed members to suspend participation in statutory meetings and other official activities of the university, including Senatemeetings, Faculty Board meetings and related institutional engagements.
The branch leadership urged members to remain united and committed to the collective struggle, stressing the need for compliance with the strike directive in order to achieve the union’s demands.
The union said it would communicate further developments to its members as negotiations and other processes surrounding its demands progress.
The development comes against the backdrop of ASUU’s longstanding concerns over the implementation of agreements with the Federal Government, funding of public universities, staff welfare and conditions of service.
The strike is therefore likely to generate concerns among students, parents and other stakeholders, particularly if it persists for an extended period and disrupts the institution’s academic schedule.
