SWEEP Foundation NG has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sweepsmart NL and the Ogun State Government for the establishment of a large-scale mixed-waste processing facility in Ogun State.
The agreement was sealed on February 16, 2026, during the ongoing Nigeria Circular Economy Week in Lagos, in what stakeholders described as a significant step towards strengthening sustainable waste management and circular economy practices in the country.
The signing ceremony, witnessed by the Consular General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lagos, drew sustainability professionals, circular economy advocates and other key stakeholders.
The event highlighted innovative approaches to tackling Nigeria’s growing waste management challenges.
President and Chief Executive Officer of SWEEP Foundation NG, Ambassador Obuesi Phillips, expressed optimism about the project, noting that the proposed facility will process more than 330 tons of mixed municipal waste daily.
According to him, the plant will convert waste into valuable products including Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), compost, recyclables and Black Soldier Fly (BSF).
Phillips said the facility would not only address mounting waste concerns but also promote value reintegration and environmental sustainability.
“This facility will have a ripple effect, addressing waste management challenges across multiple states and contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment for millions of Nigerians,” he said.
Founder of Sweepsmart NL, Niel van den Hoek, described the partnership as a demonstration of the strong potential of Nigeria–Dutch business collaborations in driving sustainable development.
“We are thrilled to partner with SWEEP Foundation NG and the Ogun State Government on this groundbreaking project. This collaboration demonstrates the potential for Nigeria-Dutch business partnerships to drive sustainable development and we look forward to cementing this relationship,” he stated.
Under the agreement, Sweepsmart NL will provide advanced Dutch waste management technology and infrastructure to power the facility, ensuring the deployment of modern and efficient processing systems.
The project is expected to generate wide-ranging social, environmental and economic benefits for Ogun State, neighbouring Lagos State and the wider region. It is also projected to stimulate job creation, foster economic growth and serve as a model for future international partnerships in Nigeria’s environmental sector.
