The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the interpretation of a recent Court of Appeal ruling by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the electoral body of yielding to political pressure from the federal government.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party alleged that INEC’s position was influenced by a government unsettled by what it described as the ADC’s growing political momentum.
The party further claimed that despite what it termed sustained efforts to weaken opposition parties, the ruling administration was now attempting to impose a one-party system on the country.
According to the ADC, INEC’s interpretation of the court’s decision was riddled with contradictions and failed to align with established facts and logical reasoning.
The party said it would soon provide a detailed clarification of the inconsistencies identified in the commission’s statement.
“What is clear, however, is that INEC has caved to pressure and has chosen to side with the government against the Nigerian people,” the statement read.
The ADC disclosed that it is currently reviewing its legal and political options and would announce its next steps in due course.
It also called on its members and supporters, as well as the general public, to remain calm and steadfast while awaiting further directives.
The development adds to ongoing tensions between opposition parties and electoral authorities ahead of future political activities in the country.
