President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has been awarded the 2026 Arthur Svensson International Prize for Trade Union Rights in recognition of his commitment to defending workers’ rights and promoting democratic freedoms.
The Arthur Svensson Prize, established in honour of Norwegian trade unionist Arthur Svensson, is one of the world’s most respected honours in the labour movement, often spotlighting individuals and organisations operating in restrictive or high-risk environments.
The prestigious prize, conferred annually by the Arthur Svensson International Workers’ Memorial Foundation, honours trade unionists and organisations worldwide who have demonstrated exceptional courage in the struggle for labour rights under challenging conditions.
Ajaero, widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading labour activists, was recognised for his decades-long advocacy for fair wages, improved working conditions, and the protection of workers against repression and exploitation.
Under his leadership, the Nigeria Labour Congress has remained a vocal force in national discourse, frequently engaging government authorities on policies affecting workers, including fuel subsidy removal, inflationary pressures, and labour reforms.
In its citation, the awarding body praised Ajaero’s “courageous and principled stance in defence of trade union rights,” noting his role in mobilising workers and resisting policies perceived to undermine social justice and economic equity.
The foundation also highlighted the increasingly difficult environment in which trade unions operate in many parts of the world, including Nigeria, where labour leaders often face intimidation, arrests, and restrictions on peaceful assembly.
Reacting to the award, labour leaders in Nigeria described it as a recognition not only of Ajaero’s personal sacrifices but also of the resilience of Nigerian workers.
Ajaero’s tenure as NLC president has been marked by a series of high-profile engagements with the Federal Government, including nationwide protests and negotiations over minimum wage adjustments and the cost-of-living crisis.
Observers say the award further elevates Nigeria’s labour movement on the global stage and underscores the importance of protecting workers’ rights as a cornerstone of democratic governance.
Analysts note that Ajaero’s recognition comes at a critical time, as workers across Nigeria continue to grapple with economic hardship, rising unemployment, and concerns over labour protections.
The award ceremony is expected to take place later in the year in Norway, where Ajaero will join a distinguished list of past laureates who have made significant contributions to advancing global labour rights.
