The caucus of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the House of Representatives has reaffirmed its commitment to playing a robust opposition role and remaining loyal to the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers made the declaration on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the National Leader of the NDC, Henry Seriake Dickson, at his Abuja residence.
The delegation was led by the House Minority Leader, Victor Afam Ogene, and included Hon. George Ozodinobi, Hon. Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, Hon. Lillian Orogbu, Hon. Atta Thaddeous Achief, Hon. Chijioke Okereke, Hon. Peter Ozokwe, Hon. Murphy Osaro Omoruyi, Hon. Emeka Idu, Hon. Manuchim Omezuruike, Hon. Muktar Umar Zakari, Hon. Yusuf Umar Datti, Hon. Peter Aniekwe, and Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, among others.
Also present at the meeting were the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections.
Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Ogene said the visit was aimed at reaffirming the lawmakers’ loyalty to the party and their commitment to serving Nigerians through constructive opposition politics.
“We are here as members of the House of Representatives caucus of the NDC to reassure the leadership of our commitment to serve the Nigerian people in line with the ideals and vision of the party,” he said.
The Minority Leader stressed that the caucus would continue to hold the Federal Government accountable and ensure that democratic dividends reach ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, the opposition lawmakers would remain vigilant in scrutinising government policies and programmes to ensure transparency, accountability and good governance.
Ogene described the NDC as a fast-growing opposition platform in the National Assembly, particularly in the House of Representatives, adding that the caucus was determined to strengthen democratic engagement and provide Nigerians with a credible political alternative ahead of 2027.
“Our voice as an opposition bloc will continue to resonate across the country and beyond as we demand responsible leadership and responsive governance,” he stated.
He further assured the party leadership of the lawmakers’ unwavering allegiance to both the NDC and the Nigerian people.
Responding on behalf of the party leadership, Kwankwaso commended the lawmakers for what he described as their steadfast loyalty and dedication to the party, noting that loyalty had become a rare virtue in Nigeria’s political space.
He assured the caucus of the party leadership’s support and urged members to remain united in pursuit of what he termed a national movement for positive change.
Kwankwaso also called on Nigerians to register with the NDC and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the next general elections.
He urged party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation across their constituencies, especially among youths and first-time voters.
“We must continue to engage the people at the grassroots, particularly young Nigerians who are eager to see a better and more inclusive country,” he said.
Political observers believe the meeting signals growing collaboration among key opposition figures as political realignments gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
The gathering also comes amid increasing conversations around coalition-building among opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
