Supporters of former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi—popularly known as the Obidient Movement—have issued an ultimatum to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), demanding that Obi be made the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election or risk their exit from the party.
The development has stirred tension within the ADC, particularly among northern stakeholders and supporters of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who are said to be uneasy with what they describe as an overbearing and undemocratic posture by Obi’s supporters.
According to party insiders, the northern bloc prefers an open and competitive presidential primary rather than what they view as an attempt by the Obidient Movement to impose a candidate on the party.
Reacting to the controversy, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, cautioned against actions capable of causing division within the party.
Speaking during the party’s virtual “ADC Coalition Hours”, Abdullahi said individuals insisting that Peter Obi must emerge as the party’s flagbearer were promoting disunity.
He warned that such a mindset could weaken the party’s chances in the 2027 presidential election, stressing the need for unity and collective commitment.
Abdullahi added that he had engaged with key stakeholders to underscore the importance of cohesion in achieving electoral success.
Meanwhile, political analysts say the rivalry between Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi could significantly shape the fortunes of the ADC ahead of 2027.
While some analysts argue that Atiku could secure the party’s presidential ticket through the primaries, they express doubts about his ability to defeat incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a general election.
Atiku, a long-time presidential aspirant since the era of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is viewed by some Nigerians as a recurring figure on the ballot, with growing voter fatigue, including in parts of the North.
Conversely, analysts note that although Obi may face challenges clinching the ADC ticket, he is perceived as having broader appeal that could pose a serious challenge to President Tinubu in a free and fair election.
They warn that a deeply divisive primary process within the ADC could ultimately benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu in 2027.
