Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has congratulated elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a courageous patriot and one of the most respected surviving disciples of late nationalist, Obafemi Awolowo.

Pa Fasoranti, who clocks 100 on Monday, May 11, has remained a prominent voice in the advocacy for true federalism, good governance, justice and the protection of Yoruba interests through his leadership of Afenifere.

Sanwo-Olu, who also serves as Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum, praised the nonagenarian for his immense contributions to national development, particularly in the areas of education, public service and leadership.

In a congratulatory message issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor described Fasoranti as a committed, passionate and highly respected leader whose legacy continues to inspire generations of Nigerians.

According to the governor, the Afenifere leader has distinguished himself as a fearless and uncompromising statesman who dedicated much of his life to the service of humanity and the advancement of democratic ideals in Nigeria.

Sanwo-Olu noted that Fasoranti’s leadership of Afenifere over the years has earned him admiration across Yorubaland and beyond, adding that his contributions to nation-building remain invaluable.

“On behalf of my family, the government and people of Lagos State, as well as my brother governors in the South-West, I congratulate the Leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on his centenary birthday celebration,” the governor said.

He added that Fasoranti had played a significant role in sustaining the ideals of the late Awolowo by championing truth, equity, justice and good governance throughout his active years in public life.

“Papa Fasoranti has made tremendous contributions to the growth and development of Yorubaland and Nigeria. His steadfast commitment to the Nigerian project and his consistent advocacy for true federalism and fairness have continued to inspire many Nigerians,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The Lagos governor further described Fasoranti’s attainment of 100 years in good health and sound mind as a rare blessing worthy of celebration, noting that the people of the South-West were proud to identify with him on the historic milestone.

Born in 1926, Fasoranti is widely regarded as one of the most influential Yoruba leaders of his generation. A former Commissioner for Finance in the old Western State, he has remained active in socio-political discourse and is revered for his principled stance on national issues.

Sanwo-Olu prayed for continued good health, wisdom and strength for the elder statesman as he celebrates his centenary.
