The Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Rufa’i Sani Hanga finally disclosed his resignation from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Hanga’s official resignation has finally put an end to days of speculation and further reaffirmed his parting ways with leader of Kwankwasiyya Movement Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Hanga, Senate Chief Minority Whip confirmed his resignation in a letter dated August 3rd, 2026 and addressed to the Chairman of the NDC in Dakata Ward, Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
Hanga disclosed the resignation takes immediate effect, explaining that the decision followed “careful reflection and personal deliberation.”
He stated that he had decided to withdraw his membership from the party to pursue “other personal commitments and career paths.”
The senator expressed appreciation to the ward leadership, the Ward Executive Committee and members of the party for the opportunities, support and fellowship he enjoyed during his time in the NDC.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Monday, Samir said “Betrayal has forced my father out of the political journey he embraced in good faith,” which suggest that issues of trust and loyalty may have influenced the senator’s decision.
Although, Hanga did not revealed his next line of political journey in the resignation letter, the Senator had recently met with President Bola Ahmad Tinubu at the state house in company of Senator Barau I. Jibrin, representing Kano North.
Prior to the meeting with the President, Senator Hanga had similar closed door meeting with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.
Analysts opined that Senator Hanga had already concluded move to defect to the ruling APC after several strategic meetings with the President and other stakeholders in the party.
Hanga, had kicked against Governor Yusuf’s defection and realignment with the ruling party accused him of betraying Kwankwasiyya leader Senator Kwankwaso. After several accusations, Hanga had left NNPP along side Kwankwaso for ADC and then to NDC before he finally departed ways with Kwankwaso in NDC.
