In a statement issued on Wednesday, Abiodun Olarewaju, university’s public relations officer (PRO), said the institution received information at about 1:30 pm on Tuesday about an emergency involving the student at an apartment in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
Olarewaju said the institution’s quick response and security team proceeded to the location after receiving the information.
Read the statement: “The Nigeria Police was immediately contacted, and officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joined the university’s security personnel at the scene.
“The student was subsequently conveyed to the university health centre, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.
“The university is deeply concerned by the circumstances surrounding the death and has handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for further investigation.
“The police have commenced investigation into the circumstances of the incident”.
He cautioned members of the university’s community against spreading unverified information or speculation about the circumstances of the death while the investigation continues.
The university’s PRO advised students experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures and other personal challenges to seek help from trusted persons and appropriate support structures.
Reacting to the incident, Simeon Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of the university, extended condolences to the family, friends, classmates and colleagues of the deceased.
Bamire expressed concern over students and other members of the university community who may be emotionally affected by the tragedy.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of staff and students.
According to the VC: “No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone”.
Abiodun Ojelabi, police spokesperson in Osun State, said that investigations showed that Oluwaseun committed suicide.
Said Ojelabi: “From the reports available to us, it is a case of suicide.“He is a 500-level student. It was a case of suicide, he hanged himself”.
